How to keep a bottle of cold-pressed oil

Have you ever bought a careful bottle of oil — then parked it next to the gas, in the light, with the cap half on?

The press is only half the story

Cold-pressed oil skips the heat and solvents that make supermarket oil last on a strip light. What you keep from the seed is also what the air can take away. The kitchen habit after you open the bottle matters as much as the mill.

What the research actually found

Cool, dark, closedThe review’s packing line is simple: lightproof, airtight, moisture-resistant, stored cool. That protects the press you already paid for.

A 2026 systematic review in Frontiers in Nutrition is blunt about storage: light, oxygen, temperature, and the pack decide how cold-pressed oil oxidises. The practical line is to settle, filter, and keep the oil in lightproof, airtight, moisture-resistant bottles, stored cool.

PUFA-rich bottles (safflower, sunflower) need that care more than coconut. None of them want a month on a sunny slab.

Fresh oil is a small habit: pour, recap, put it back in the shade.

What we do in the kitchen

Pour what you need. Recap. Keep the bottle away from the stove and the window. Do not reuse frying oil until it is spent. We press in small batches in Hyderabad and pack after PhonePe confirms — so what arrives is still a cooking oil, not a shelf ornament.

Good to know

Does cold-pressed oil last as long as refined oil?

Usually not, and that is the point. Refined oil is built for a long bright shelf. Cold-pressed oil is built for cooking. Keep it cool, dark, and closed.

Should I refrigerate it?

A shaded cupboard away from the stove is enough for most Indian kitchens. Refrigerate if the bottle sits in a very hot, bright room.
