I was brought up by my grandparents, and every morning she would wake up at 5 AM to cook for me, so I could take my lunchbox to school.
The kitchen
Almost every day, I woke up to the aroma of tadka, or talimpu, sizzling over stone-ground chutney, what we call roti pachadi at home. My grandfather loved eating it every day, and she made it with the same care each morning.
Waking
That aroma was the first thing I remember waking up to. As I slowly became conscious, I would hear M.S. Subbulakshmi Amma’s Venkateswara Suprabhatam playing in the background, followed by the familiar whistle of the pressure cooker.
I miss those mornings.
